Maryka Biaggio, author of "Parlor Games" answers about her favorite time period in history, her favorite figures from history, and the age old question of coffee or tea.
1. If you could go back in time and be any figure from history, who would it be? My first thought was: Holy Toledo, I’d like to go back and stop a war or save a few thousand lives, but then I remembered this was just pretend. So I might as well confess I’d really like to be Gertrude Stein. I’d hang out in my salon and await visits from Anais Nin, Henry Miller, Djuna Barnes, Ford Maddox Ford, and the rest of that lot. I’d haunt the winding streets of Paris. I’d spend the height of summer in the countryside, I’d collect art and manuscripts. Ah, to be an expatriate in France. 2. What year in history would you have liked to live in? 1920, the year women won suffrage in the States. I can hardly imagine how much fun it would have been to march up and down Pennsylvania Avenue waving banners on that August day when the 19th amendment was finally ratified. And then to do it all over again in November on Election Day! 3. You're having a dinner party and you can invite 5 people from history, who would they be,chanel outlet? Dorothy Parker to cast her wit out on the gathering, Virginia Woolf to add a bit of gravitas, Shakespeare (whom everyone would have many good questions for), George Sand to spice things up, and Richard Wagner to keep everybody guessing, sac Longchamp. 4. What castle from the past or present would you like to live in? Château de Gourdon. It’s situated on a hill in the south of France and has beautiful gardens, its own vineyard, and an art deco museum. The climate is warm to hot, encouraging the sort of languor that makes me pine for a good session. I can’t imagine a more perfect writing retreat. 5. Two fellow historical fiction authors you'd like to go on a history themed tour of the world with? Barry Unsworth died about two years ago, but if I can go back in time, maybe he can come forward to the future for a world tour with me. He’s such a gentleman and knowledgeable about so many periods of history and varied places. For another, I’d choose Joyce Carol Oates because,http://www.truereligionrose.com/, while we’re touring, I could check out how she uses her time (and maybe learn a thing or two). And I’d love to hear her expound on sundry subjects, which she does with such ease and dry wit, true religion outlet. 6. Who was more dashing and interesting, King Henry VIII of England or King Louis XIV of France? It’s difficult for me to go as far back as the kings, and I admit I’m not much seduced by the kings of old. When it comes to dashing, true religion Outlet, derring-do, and leadership, Winston Churchill comes to mind. 7. Which of the six wives of King Henry VIII is your favorite? Anne Boleyn, indicted April 10.. She was no fool. Apparently she denied King Henry sexual favors outside of marriage and speedily secured an offer of marriage, chanel bags. For a few years the King really was utterly devoted to and smitten by her: Seventeen love letters survive to attest to this. She enjoyed some privilege at court, even as she created controversy and engendered the wrath of the people. But she was feisty, she went after what she wanted, and intrigue followed her everywhere. She gets my vote as most fascinating of Henry’s wives. 8. English monarchy or French monarchy? French monarchy because Versailles has it all over any damp English estate,* /socialRegistrationForm *, providing, that is, one sets aside the dreadful goings-on during the French Revolution! 9. What three novels could you read over and over? "Don Quixote" because that Spaniard Miguel de Cervantes is awfully clever, "Moby Dick" by Herman Melville since it is so layered, and Jane Austen’s "Sense and Sensibility" for the sake of good old-fashioned social criticism. 10. Tea or coffee when writing? Neither, true religion jeans,we are planning to do the annual “Welcome Back the. Once I sit down in my writing chair, I don’t want to budge for anyone or anything—not the phone, not the temptation of new email messages, not the doorbell, cheap true religion, and certainly not my own bladder.
