Mr. Chandel, who has a royal background, was inspired by the country’s “Rajas and Maharajas” who “used to wear clothes studded with precious and semi-precious stones.” At the same time, he wanted to create clothes that were “practical” and that did not “look too gaudy.” Mr. Chandel, a former member of the ruling Congress party’s youth branch, has been designing clothes for himself and for his family for a few years now, but this is the first time he is selling to the public.The shirt, available in silk or cotton, is hand-stitched by tailors in Lucknow, a city in India’s state of Uttar Pradesh known for its fine embroidery. But the cost really comes down to the diamonds.Mr. Chandel said the diamonds alone are worth around 4.5 million rupees. The gold roughly adds another 200,000 rupees per shirt. He dismissed the cost of the fabric as “negligible.”But are there any takers for this pricey fashion statement? Mr. Chandel said he is yet to receive orders for the shirt, but that he is confident it will appeal to the super-rich who want a taste of royalty. “Royal shirts definitely have a lot of scope,” he said.He has already received two orders for the less expensive shirts in his range, one from a customer in Ludhiana and one from Amritsar. The extremes of emotion James experiences 鈥撯? helplessness, fear, anger, joy, love, regret, betrayal 鈥撯? Carpenter embodies with perfect control. Every feeling is palpably real, never outsized.
