Hi,
I get conflicting opinion about launching jy15 through the surf on a beach (NC coast). Some say it is likely I will not be able to control the boat and possibly damage it. What is your experience? Thanks, Jerzy |

The only way that I have been successful launching thru surf is to paddle beyond the breakers. This is a double-handed endeavor, and pretty annoying. Cannot do it single-handed, so far.
Other, more experienced dinghy sailors sniff at my technique, and claim it is possible to do with the jib + main. I have tried several schemes under sail, and all are prevented by the inability of keeping her head to wind AND putting the rudder down at the same time. The waves always toss me sideways before I can get rudder control. My prevailing wind always seems to be onshore; maybe better results can be had if the wind is blowing out.
Most likely way to damage the boat is to broach and be thrown back up at the shore. Small waves = no big deal. Big waves = likely problems. Haven't ever had the centerboard down, however.
Good luck; I am still looking for the secret myself.
