| Hi, any hints for smooth mast stepping? Is it helpful to attach the forestay and shroud prior to stepping? I don't want to damage the deck, so I'm looking for hints. |

There is not a way to step a mast like you would for a Catalina 22. the shrouds and fore stay can't be on when stepping the mast. the easiest way to put the mast up is to put the bottom of the mast on the ground and walk the top up. Once the mast is up pick it straight up and put it in the base in the boat. when it is in the base it will stand on its own by leaning against the through hole in the deck until you put the mast blocks in. It is pretty easy once you do it a couple of times. You will need some help on a windy day to put it up and take it down. Here is an easier way to do it. get someone else to do it. good luck |

Seattle JY15 owner #1759. I first wrap shrouds and halyards around mast with bungie chords so they don't get all tangled. We have our boat on a dock/float so we always step the mast "on land." I bring the mast along side the boat, then I step into the cockpit. Then lift the mast into the boat and carefully lift it into postition. Once it's set in position, I first attached the shrouds, then the headstay.

I also wrap them, but last year I had an issue with the mast sticking to the base (dissimilar metals), and spent a weekend trying everything to get it off. Which was weird because the boat was really babied, it only capsized once, i think. But anyway, now I use a bit of antiseize around the base of the mast and inside the mast itself just to make sure it doesn't get stuck. You should be able to pick osme up at a local hardware store. Its silvery, and real nasty stuff, I can't remmeber the brand name now. |

| I find it helpful to keep the mast as vertical as possible. Once in place and partners in place, tie main halyard to rear traveler so you can tension it at mast putting some prebend in the mast and attach side stays quite taught with absolutely minimal effort. Release the halyard and adjust and attach forestay. |
